The noises are getting louder, and as always, at times like this, Arsenal’s Arsenal Wenger retreats into a stoic silence.

The Gunners have fired the hopes and dreams of their loyal fan-base with promises of big signings.

A £20million move for Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid was to set the ball rolling.

The names of Wayne Rooney and Marouanne Fellaini were dropped with more than just a passing interest. And not just by the over-eager British press.

According to reports, the Higuain move has stalled because Real Madrid have not yet appointed a successor to Jose Mourinho and Higuain wants to know before committing to his future.

For a real statement of intent though, why does Arsenal and its new board make a move for Gareth Bale.

Sacrilege, might ring out the cry at the Emirates.

However, in today’s cut-throat world of winning football trophies, ruthlessness is needed. On the field and off it.

If Bale is ready to move, and for regular Champions League action, what better coup could Arsenal pull off than steal him from bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Wenger needs a wingman of the quality of Cristiano Ronaldo, who well could be back in the Premier League in any case next season.

Right now he has Theo Walcott switching between wings and centre, when Walcott clearly wants to play centre.

Bizarrely he has Lukas Podolski operating on the wing as well at times.

If Arsenal are going to go with Olivier Giroud in the middle, Wenger might as well line-up the best wingman the Premier League has given the world for some time.

Gareth Bale at Arsenal. Now that would be a statement of intent.
