David Moyes’ big transfer move might come in the middle of the park, where Michael Carrick has remained impervious – but is so vital now that should he get injured, United will be in deep trouble.
Against Chelsea United had an 84% pass percentage, much of which is down to Carrick.
Tom Cleverley also had an outstanding game, but it is Cleverley’s consistency that must worry Moyes.
So he must decide.
Mesuit Ozil from Real Madrid, or, his own midfield Frankenstein –Marouanne Fellaini.
Ozil’s future was put into the transfer mix after he reacted angrily to being substituted on Monday night, when Real beat Granada 1-0.
Arsene Wenger and Arsenal are also said to be in the reckoning for Ozil, though a move to United might be more tempting for the Blancos’ playmaker.
Fellaini and Everton manager Roberto Martinez, meanwhile, wait for Moyes to make what they hope is a realistic offer for the Belgian.
In terms of midfield creativity Ozil might tip the scales, allowing Carrick to release the ball the much earlier and freeing Cleverley to run the channels.
However, in sheer terms of attacking options Marouanne Fellaini might be the better option.
In United dreamland of course, both will come.
Fellaini for the Premier League and Ozil for Europe.
Winger trouble
Chelsea exposed what Manchester United have glossed over for some time - the winger crisis.
Antonio Valencia is struggling to get anywhere near the form he once tortured wing-backs with.
Nani is injured. Wilifred Zaha might still need a season to get up to speed in the top flight.
Moyes should some media nous in his remarks on Gareth Bale, though reports from Madrid almost certainly conclude that the Welsh wizard will move there.
Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Danny Wellbeck have all done time on the left wing as well. It looks like that will be the trend this season. Unless… Cristiano Ronaldo returns.
