Free access to stadiums and contests involving big cash prizes have failed to spur football spectators in the world’s wealthiest nation — Qatar.
A recent football match between two local clubs battling for the country’s cup lured in only one fan.
A brief YouTube film published in regional newspapers showed just one man was watching the match between Al Ghorfa and Khureitat clubs although the stadium can accommodate nearly 25,000 people.
“There has been a general trend by the Qataris to stay away from the stadiums.
“Authorities are worried about this phenomenon although many stadiums are giving free tickets for matches and holding contests involving valuable prizes,” the Kuwaiti Arabic language daily Al Anba said.
